After three months of depleted savings and maxed-out credit cards, they missed their first mortgage payment. Sarah picked up extra shifts, but Mike's job search continued without success. The stress began affecting their marriage and their children's schoolwo rk. Emma stopped inviting friends over, embarrassed by the shut-off notices taped to their door.

By month five, foreclosure proceedings began. They sold one car and most of their furniture, moving into a small two-bedroom apartment. But without Mike's income, even the $1,400 rent proved impossible. After missing two months' rent, they received an eviction notice.

The hardest moment was telling the children they had to leave. They spent two weeks couch-surfing between friends, but could tell their welcome was wearing thin. Finally, they ended up sleeping in their remaining car in a Walmart parking lot, using the store's bathroom to get ready for school and work

Sadly, but this is the story of too many of Idaho's families. The stone cold truth of it all, is most families today are just one to two paychecks away from becoming homeless.
